Today is the birthday in 1907 of a great (and largely unheralded) authentic modern spiritual guide, of whom the numbers are few: the late Lord John Pentland. Lord Pentland was a luminary both within and beyond the Gurdjieff Work, of which he was one of the very most realized practitioners and teachers. I saw in Lord Pentland, my first guru, a truly remarkable being, whose many dedicated years of immersion in the extraordinary teachings brought by George I. Gurdjieff led to a most extraordinary flowering in his later years, which illuminated within and beyond the Gurdjieff Foundations of New York, San Francisco and Paris. He was widely known and respected among traditional teachers from many traditions. In his early years, Lord Pentland studied with P.D. Ouspensky, one of the master George I. Gurdjieffs earliest and most outstanding students. After Ouspenskys death, Lord Pentland became a close student of Mr. Gurdjieff himself, then, following the masters death in 1949, of his principal successor, Mme. Jeanne de Salzmann. There is much to say, and ever-fewer to say it-- but Lord Pentland was an amazing, remarkable, transforming human being, whose unique light touched the lives and hearts of many.
