Today little Geru started her Bharatanatyam classes, on the insistence of my father who kept telling us to enroll her in a classical dance form. Saying, the lil one is born to dance. This evening was Day One. Where is her mother? She should have come...the lady who had come to enquire initially... the teacher apparently asked my mother who had accompanied Geru, along with her mother. My mother laughed. Then before she could say anything, Geru said, tightening her small dupatta, Sir Didi is in house. She break leg. Didi is my Didi. This my Dida. Dadu, big Boss. Ma, Shikha. She cooking. Didi ashbe... The teacher scooping her up in his arms. Its a big day in my little friends life, and as I imagine her dancing as I write this, I think what a privilege it is for us. To be Gerus surrogate family, in a sense. Maybe Ma is right. Social work does not stop and start with orphanage visits and talking about how much you can do for how many underprivileged kids. Who decides what is privilege in the first place! Sometimes, all it takes is to light up one childs life. You need a good heart. A big heart. Good luck Geru! Go on. Dance. Dance. Dance 💃💃
