Today marks nine months since my move to Oregon. (WOW.) Here, in no particular order, are some of my favorite discoveries from my quadrant of the Willamette Valley: 1) The Corvallis Farmers Market. Look, I know you have your own farmers markets, but this one feels like you’ve stumbled onto a set from the Gilmore Girls. It’s not just that it’s visually charming with small children running through the fountain, it’s that it’s impossible to walk through without meeting half a dozen friends. From the university, that is. Not from church. I guess Mormons prefer WinCo. 2) Silver Falls Park. You have no idea. Google it, and you will still have no idea. 3) Berry season. 4) Dorcas Smucker. Raised Amish, married a Mennonite minister, writes a monthly column for the Register-Guard (area newspaper). Also blogs. dorcassmucker.blogspot 5) Homemade hazel nut brittle (see number 1). 6) The deer who graze on the hill outside my window, and who have just produced twin babies. Funniest thing watching those fauns try to leap after their mother – there’s no forward momentum, it’s all up and down. They look like yoyos. 7) Fresh herb gardens. 8) Family.
