Today marks the 94th anniversary of the establishment of The Grand National Assembly of Turkey. On April 23, 1920, during the War of Independence, a new parliament representing national sovereignty gathered in Ankara for the first time under the visionary leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The inauguration of the The Grand National Assembly of Turkey paved the way for an independent, secular and modern republic from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk believed that the children were the future of the nation. With that belief, Atatürk dedicated April 23 to children from all around the world in 1929. Turkey became the first country in the world to celebrate a national holiday devoted to children. As ATA-DC Board of Directors, we are proud to celebrate April 23 National Sovereignty and Childrens Day and follow the footsteps of great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in raising future citizens of the world. On this special day, we commemorate Atatürk and all men and women, who sacrificed their lives while defending their country, with great gratitude and deep respect. Please join us on Sunday, April 27 at 11 a.m. to celebrate National Sovereignty and Childrens Day. All families and children are invited for a half day program at the Turkish Embassy.
