Today on POP WEEK The final day: Grimes Part of the reason - TopicsExpress

Today on POP WEEK The final day: Grimes Part of the reason people like me are suddenly running out to buy the new Taylor Swift album is because traditional top-40 artists and their production team suddenly had to get good, not because they wanted to, but because they had to. For the first time ever pop music was actually facing significant competition from the underground. Ten years ago a ballerina from Vancouver studying neuroscience at McGill who produced an entire EP completely alone in her house probably wouldnt have shown up on the radar of big industry executives. Now the video for Genesis has more views on Youtube than some of Kelly Clarksons songs. The lines have blurred, with pop music becoming underground, and the underground becoming pop music. Although Grimes reduced the hipster community to a crying mess on day one, much of her mythos comes from her Boiler Room set last year during which she played selections like The Vengaboys, Mariah Careys All I Want For Christmas Is You, and Daddy Yankee. At first this move was viewed as a troll, with many in the techno scene accusing her of defiling the sanctity of a location that showcases music typically known to defile sanctity. It wasnt until months later that people realized Grimes is essentially Warhol 2014 edition. Her set was a commentary on the interplay between the notions of pop, and the notion of art. This same commentary is one displayed by all the artists on this list so far, and it will undoubtedly continue to be displayed by artists like CHVRCHES, Banks, MØ, Broods, Ryn Weaver, AlunaGeorge, Charli XCX (possibly), Elliphant, Ella Eyre, Jessie Ware, and all the other artists at the forefront of pop. #popweek
