Today, one of my students confided in me that last week he had tragically lost his grandfather in an automobile accident and within the same week he and his family had been evicted from their appartment. He made no mention of this to any other staff member...why me? Maybe because I was the one not to scold him for being off task and for his lack of efffort in class but instead took the time to ask him if everything was ok. Thankful I was able to follow up and provide community resources for him and his family. You never know the heavy burdens your students come to school with.
