Today, protest leaders met with government officials in Hong Kong - TopicsExpress

Today, protest leaders met with government officials in Hong Kong to debate the student-led protesters demand for full democracy. Although there was no breakthrough, the fact that these talks even occurred is a positive sign. The talks were broadcast to the public, allowing citizens to listen to them live and hopefully feel more informed about the process. In a country that has cracked down viciously against demonstrators in the past, the current student protests have been allowed to continue relatively peacefully and have resulted in dialogue instead of death. I hope there is progress in allowing more voices to be heard and represented in Hong Kongs government and that such positive change spreads to mainland China. I am sure there will be more setbacks, but I am also optimistic that the future will yield more governments moving towards representing the people, not ruling over them.
