Today, the Harkin Minimum Wage Fairness Act (S. 2223) came to the U.S. Senate floor for consideration, and a bipartisan group of 55 senators voiced their support for a vote on the moral imperative of raising the minimum wage. Unfortunately, they failed because this legislation was filibustered by a minority of senators. UUSC is disappointed in the actions of the senators who are denying a vote on this most important legislation. The Minimum Wage Fairness Act would give over 28 million workers a raise and is supported by more than 70 percent of Americans. We at UUSC believe that the current minimum wage is a moral outrage and that no one should work full-time and live in poverty. The vote today, while disappointing, is only part of a moral arc that will bend toward justice for workers. We commit to redoubling our efforts to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 and to ensure a raise for tipped workers. We encourage Unitarian Universalists and other people of faith to stand up for what is morally right and take action with all those who seek fair and just compensation for their labor. -Rev. Bill Schulz, president of UUSC Call the Senate today at 866-204-2557 and voice your support for raising the minimum wage.
