Today, the Mid - City Red Lions took the field for the 2nd game of the Baltimore Bays College Showcase against Pro Futbol United from Maryland. Both teams had scored four goals in their respective game yesterday, so this was building up to be a good one. The first half was scoreless and both teams had some good chances, but Mid - City had the edge in ball possession. Playing without midfielder Adam Everett due to a knee injury and new center midfielder Ricardo Garcia sitting due to a red card, the team had to make some adjustments to the line - up, but this did not to seem to affect the team adversely, as they had much of the play in the first half. In the second half, the Red Lions turned up the heat on the Pro Futbol United side and pressured them relentlessly all over the field. Midway through the second half, Atlanta Midfielder, Jairo Velasquez stole the ball just outside Uniteds box, beat two players and calmly slotted the ball beneath the opposing keeper to go up 1 - 0. But with five minutes left in the half, the United squad, thanks to a bad offsides call by the linesman, broke through and tied the game 1 - 1. The Mid - City Lions were unfazed and forward, Milton Duarte scored a brilliant goal far post after beating three players in the box. Unfortunately, the goal was disallowed. The Lions continued to press and with two minutes left, the team got a foul on the right side of Uniteds box about 30 yards out. Captain Geinner Duque took the free kick and placed a beautifully driven ball back post that center defender Juan Sierra headed like a rocket into the back of the net. The team erupted and the Mid - City Red Lions hadwon their 7th straight game 2 - 1. the whole team played outstanding, but the midfield connection of Patrick PK Kibler, Marvin Mosquera, and Jairo Velasquez was stellar. The defense of Manuel Silvano, Juan Sierra, Geinner Duque, and Bryan Contreras, was nearly perfect all day, shutting down the opposing team, and finally, the untiring work rate of the forwards, Ian Dotson, Kevin Otokare, and Milton Duarte, caused trouble for the United side all day long. As always, Captain and goalie Alex Trujillo was solid as a rock, commanding his box and making sure that the Red Lions maintained a steady flow in the game. The Mid - City Red Lions are looking to go UNDEFEATED in their second consecutive college showcase when they face, PA Classics Premier from Pennsylvania tomorrow at 8am !! Wish them luck as they look to start the college showcase with a fantastic 8 - 1 record. Great Job Boys !!
