Today took me to Vimy Ridge to see the Canadian memorial, - TopicsExpress

Today took me to Vimy Ridge to see the Canadian memorial, cemeteries and tunnel/trench works. A fantastic site, and the memorial is spectacular. I was there by 9am and shared the place with barely half a dozen other folks, which is a pretty great way to see these places. The position offers a commanding view for miles beyond - obviously a key strategic point. The trench works are brilliant, apparently built by troops after the war who emptied the sandbags and filled them with concrete to make a more permanent record of their experience. One can literally throw a stone from the Canadian forward trench to the German equivalent, also preserved on the site. The tunnel system was also fascinating and helped me connect to the experience - there was even a preserved officers quarters which was very spartan and tight. Im in the Arras train station waiting for a train back to Paris where Ill spend the night before heading home in the morning. The time vanished, tho Im hardly surprised.
