Today was a bittersweet day, as I turned in my classroom keys at Tarrant County College for the last time. After 10 years as an adjunct instructor in the English Department on the Northeast Tarrant County campus, that season of my life has come to a close. The administration has forced adjunct professors out of the classroom in favor of full-time instructors, offering us only online and dual credit (high school senior English/college English). I am a college classroom instructor. Ive tried the other two...not good at them (theres a reason I never went into Secondary Education after getting my teaching certificate!!). And in fairness, some of the full timers are not happy with this decision either as they now have to teach evening and weekend classes...something many of them feel they have graduated from. And some of them enjoyed teaching both online and dual credit, but the difference is...they get a choice. After theyre scheduled their 5 classroom classes, they can take on online or dual credit classes. We cannot...there simply arent enough classroom classes to meet the mandate of 5 per full-time instructor with any left-over for adjuncts. So, while Im sad that I wont be teaching there any more (and the thought of not having that job is scary), I am looking toward the positive, and that is discovering what the new season of my life holds. More writing? For sure!! More filmmaking? I hope so!! More time for me?? Yeah, baby!! Wha?? Its been way too many years since Ive had that opportunity! :-) All in all, Im looking forward to what the future has to offer!! And the evening ended on a very lovely note...dinner with a wonderful friend of 27 years whom I just dont get to see enough of!! And he totally loved Farinas Winery and Cafe!! Score!! :-)
