Today was an eye opener. Im in a position that enables me to interact with several patients a day. I get a glimpse of what peoples lives are like and get updated every time I see them. Some have good news and some...well, dont. One patient today, whom Ive now seen several times, dropped a bomb on me. When I first saw him, he was just recently married and couldnt be happier. Next visit, his wife was a few months pregnant and he was soon to be a father. Time after that, I learned that he was now a proud father to a baby girl, however at the same time his wife was in the hospital for an illness. Well 6 months later, today, happy to see him, I asked how his wife and kid is. He told me that his wife had recently passed away from the illness we once spoke of. Heavy, heavy, heavy. After expressing my deepest condolences, he said, with a smile, that he was so happy/thankful for the year he had together with her as a family. Hes now a 27 year old widower, a single father and is still able to have a positive mindset. Truly amazing. His story really resonated with me and after noticing a decline in his hygiene, I purchased him a new electric toothbrush with the desire to brighten just one of his days in the rigorous journey he now has to embark on. Baffled, he accepted it, and said, are you serious? Later I found out from the front office staff that he left with tears in his eyes. Long story longer, learn to love life and live it to its full capacity. Be kind and caring towards others for their struggles are not written on their foreheads for us to see. #whataday
