Today was another great, beautiful and sunny September day with calm waters and lots of wildlife to see! Within 30 minute of its departure the Lukwa and a group of excited passengers came across twos pod of orcas. It was delightful! There were two matrilineal families in the area, the A30s and the A42s, spread out foraging. Our onboard hydrophone was able to pick up amazing vocals, the youngsters of the pods were very active and spy hopping, tail slapping and there were also a few calf breaches. We also saw six humpback whales! Four of them were identified by our onboard naturalist Alison as “Corporal,” “Ripple” and her calf, and “Flash,” using the MERS humpback whale identification catalogue. There was some really exciting activity going on with the humpbacks lunge feeding and tail slapping. Additionally, we saw many active Dall’s porpoise throughout the area, 40 Steller sea lions hauled out on the rocks, harbour seals and notable bird activity including sightings of oyster catchers. Our afternoon tour was a busy one today! We sent a full boat of excited people who were more than ready to see all of the incredible wildlife that this part of the world has to offer. Once again, we were fortunate enough to come across the same group of orcas from the morning. In fact, they were still in the same location as they were in the morning and foraging. Again our onboard hydrophone was able to pick up incredible vocals from these giant dolphins, and the youngsters were still active and spy hopping, belly rolling and tail slapping. With the calm waters and no wind we were treated to a beautiful and scenic experience. In the afternoon we saw five humpback whales in the same area. There were several occasions of lunge feeding, we even saw “Ripple” and her calf even hit the same bait ball at the same time! There were upwards of 70 Steller sea lions and lots of bird activity! We always tell our guests to dress in warm layers but Captain Wayne says that this warm and sunny day qualified as “t-shirt weather.” You have got to love September!
