Today we celebrate the feast of St. Benedict, the Father and Patriarch of western monasticism. He was killed as a martyr but he was a great witness to the world built by pride, materialism and maintenance of the status quo - great wall blocks, then and at present, for all those genuinely trying to follow the steps of Jesus. St. Benedict faced up to a lot of pains and persecutions in his time - temptations of the flesh, intrigues, conflicts and rejections from his own monastery, surviving assassination attempts, and overcoming his own selfish weaknesses. He is our inspiration, strength and model on living a martyred life, a life of constant dying to oneself: courageous, self/denying, passionate in his mission, total submission to Gods will, patiently enduring and an all-out pursuit of Gods character. St. Benedict, warrior, martyr and great saint! Pray for us. Amen.
