Todays Affirmation: THE WANDERING MIND Many years ago, I stood in fascination as I watched my dad flush out the filter for the pool. The early risings of curiosity about the world had directed me to watch as the water shot from the pool pump and onto the hard desert earth. I followed the small river of water as it meandered away from the pump on the flat ground. It weaved its way back and forth as it slowly chose its path. The movement of the water interested me and I called my dad over to watch the water weave back and forth. My dad watched for a minute and made the observation that the water was following the path of least resistance. This observation of my father came to mind several years later when an author commented, “Following the path of least resistance makes rivers and men crooked.” The same concept applies to our thoughts. If we just casually allow our thoughts to wander as they please, can cause more turmoil and suffering in our lives than the actual trials and difficulties that we encounter. I believe we are biologically programmed to seek out future problems so we can address them. Our thoughts, when left to their own meandering, will follow this path of least resistance for seeking out possible future problems and worrying about them. Identifying a future problem before it occurs is not detrimental to our lives. It can serve as a very helpful guide. We can adjust our current behavior before the problem arises and thus save ourselves much pain. The problem is that our minds are not content with just the actual problems looming in the near future. A worrying mind can create far more problems for us to concern ourselves with than we will ever be able to constructively address. Our overwhelmed mind, with non-stop, unsolvable problems, begins to drown itself in more anxiety than we can effectively handle. The anxiety gives rise to a sense of helplessness. All this discomfort and anguish is stirring around in our minds about problems which are of our own story telling minds creation. Recognizing this energy draining practice of the aimlessly wandering mind is the first step in slowly regaining control of unhealthy thought processes and redirect our thoughts in a purposeful and constructive direction. A flourishing person learns the art of giving direction to their thoughts. They have learned skills they can use to stop the wandering of harmful thoughts, and have learned the art of using their mind to work for them instead of against them. ~Troy Murphy Flourishing Life Society
