Todays Feature Commonwealth Country is Solomon Islands POPULATION: 571,890. CAPITAL CITY: HONIARA The Solomon Islands are located east of Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean. This archipelago comprises of 992 islands! The majority of people live in rural areas, and village life remains the same as it has done for centuries. Families build their houses next to each other, sometimes on stilts to keep their homes cool in hot weather. Guadalcanal, the capital island, is home to numerous historical war sites and was the site of the first major offensive by allied forces against the Japanese empire in World War II. The Solomon Islands is home to the largest lake in the South Pacific, the largest raised coral atoll in the world and the largest salt water lagoon in the world – which is home to thousands of rare sea creatures. The country is also home to around 69 types of bird that are found nowhere else in the world! The Solomon Islands coat of arms includes a crocodile and a shark. Christianity is the main religion. However, ancestor worship is still widely practiced. Around 70 different languages are spoken in the Solomon Islands and although English is the official one, Pidgin is the most widely used. To greet somebody in Pidgin, say ‘Halo fren, mi hapi fo lukim iu moa’, which means ‘Hello friend, I am happy to see you again’.
