Todays Tip: When a horse develops mental tension, they also develop physical tension. This translates into stiffness that is usually vertical in nature (head up, tight muscles, short, choppy stride, etc). Because its hard for a horse to be vertically stiff if they are moving with lateral flexion, bending can be very effective for dissolving tension and encouraging relaxation. The second you feel a horse get braced and tense, ask for lateral neck flexion, or for full-body bend on a circle or a figure eight. Really relax in your own body and look forward with soft eyes while encouraging relaxed, forward movement and your horses state of mind is likely to improve as well!
