Todays daily deal: THE CURVE OF TIME, by M. Wylie Blanchet. This book is a classic travel memoir and great summer listening (see description below). Heather Anne Hendersons narration is perfectly suited to Blanchets voice - she carries us away with Blanchet and we are transported to the Caprice, snuggly aboard the little vessel and enjoying the journey. In fact, this is our second wish list audiobooks, where the impetus for us to record the book comes from the narrator; they provides us with titles they really want to voice, and we do our best to make that happen. (The first wish list book we published was Greenwillow, lovingly narrated by Ann M. Richardson.) While I have lived in British Columbia all my life, and this is a BC classic, I would never have encountered this delightful book if not for Heathers desire to record it, so thank you Heather! THE CURVE OF TIME: After her husband died in 1927, leaving her with five small children, everyone expected the struggles of single motherhood on a remote island to overcome M. Wylie Blanchet. Instead, this courageous woman became one of the pioneers of “family travel,” acting as both mother and captain of the twenty-five-foot boat that became her family’s home during the long Northwest summers. Blanchet’s lyrically written account reads like fantastic fiction, but her adventures are all very real. There are dangers—rough water, bad weather, wild animals—but there are also the quiet respect and deep peace of a woman teaching her children the wonder and awesome depth of the natural world. “Filled with observations on natural history and the wonders of the wild, (Blanchets) prose, like the waterfall she describes, sings.”—Kliatt
