Todays scary is a re-make. Opinions differ, but I think that re-makes should take the original story in a different direction; Rob Zombies version of Halloween comes to mind. If it tries to be too faithful, you end up with the Gus Van Sant version of Psycho, and nobody wants that. The Thing was a creepy 1950s science fiction film about an alien hunting down the inhabitants of an Arctic outpost. John Carpenters 1982 version tells that same story, but with more grit, dread, and the kind of special effects that would have given people heart attacks back in the Fifties. Seriously, this film makes me wish that CGI never happened, because what is accomplished with animatronics and a whole lot of slime is downright miraculous. There was a 2011 remake of this version, but Im not so inclined to see it.
