Todays the big day on my #Iraq amendment with Congresswoman - TopicsExpress

Todays the big day on my #Iraq amendment with Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa. Some of you might be interested in the Dear Colleague letter we circulated to fellow Members of Congress on why they should vote for our amendment. Its below. Protect American Interests, Stay Out of Iraq: Support the Hanabusa-Garamendi Amendment to H.R. 4870 Dear Colleague: Please join me in an amendment that would protect American interests and keep U.S. forces out of another conflict in Iraq. My amendment is simple; it would ensure that President Obama does not circumvent the War Powers Resolution to unilaterally commit U.S. forces to operations in Iraq. Congress and the Administration need to seriously consider the lack of objectives or an endgame the U.S. would achieve through any further military involvement in Iraq. We know what the results are when we don’t fully consider the consequences of military action, and this miscalculation is not worth repeating to involve our nation in a situation that is the result of a longstanding sectarian conflict. U.S. focus should be on a new strategy for regional engagement, rather than the President considering options that could get us involved in a new Iraq crisis. Our priority must be ensuring that American lives are not put at risk by involving U.S. troops in combat operations in Iraq. While I understand the need to send troops into Iraq for the express purpose of providing security for U.S. personnel and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, and this amendment would not prevent the ongoing embassy security and evacuation operations recently announced by the Administration, I remain resolute that we should not resume combat operations in Iraq. The amendment reads, in full: None of the funds made available by this Act may be used with respect to Iraq in contravention of the War Powers Resolution (50 U.S.C. 1541 et seq.), including for the introduction of United States forces into hostilities in Iraq, into situations in Iraq where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, or into Iraqi territory, airspace, or waters while equipped for combat, in contravention of the congressional consultation and reporting requirements of sections 3 and 4 of such Resolution (50 U.S.C. 1542 and 1543). Sincerely, Colleen Hanabusa Member of Congress Congressman John Garamendi Member of Congress
