Today—29 December—in Hawaiian History [1927]: Ka Nūpepa Kūʻokoʻa (The Independent Newspaper) prints its last issue after sixty-six years in business. Begun in 1861, Nūpepa Kūʻokoʻa was the longest running, and for much of its run the most widely subscribed to, Hawaiian-language newspaper in Hawaiʻi. Its first editor was the Kauaʻi-born missionary son Henry Martyn Whitney. He had begun the English-language Pacific Commercial Advertiser in July 1856.
