Today’s #pillowsonavos comes from #PirkeiAvos 2:16 Rabbi Joshua said: The evil eye , the evil desire and hatred of his fellow creatures put a man out of the world. Rabbenu Yona explained that an evil eye is looking at a friends wealth and desiring it and asking one’s self when am I going to have wealth like my friend? Rabbenu Yona explained that this brings bad to him and to his friend. It creates a spirit of discontent that burns him up. This spirit of discontent causes one’s health to eventually fail. Many imagine the evil eye to be a spiritual malady that can mystically cause harm to other people. They imagine that if one person becomes jealous of another person they can turn the evil eye on them and cause them irreparable harm. This is nonsense and is nothing close to the rational wisdom of the Torah. The evil eye isn’t some mystical form of magic that can cause harm to others, it is a character fault that a person needs to correct. Jealousy has the ability to harm those that experience it.
