Today’s saint is St. William of Bourges. He was a French Cistercian bishop who distinguished himself by his austerities, concern for the poor, the defense of the rights of the Church against the French crown, and his success in converting many members of the Albigensian heresy. As a Cistercian he had lived in solitude in the monastery, eventually becoming Abbot of Chaalis. Upon his appointment as archbishop of Bourges, he was greatly distressed and only accepted upon the command of the Pope and the Abbot-general of his order. He continued to live an austere life after his elevation, saying it was incumbent on him to do penance for others as well as for himself. He died on January 10, 1209. The opening prayer for today’s Mass: Almighty ever-living God, who were pleased to shine forth with new light through the coming of your Only Begotten Son, grant, we pray, that, just as he was pleased to share our bodily form through the childbearing of the Virgin Mary, so we, too, may one day merit to become companions in his kingdom of grace. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. catholicculture.org/culture/liturgicalyear/calendar/day.cfm?date=2015-01-10
