Tomorrow is June 18th 2013 a big day for the Kenai Peninsula as the Kenai Peninsula Borough assembly will hold public hearings on KPB 2011-12 habitat anadramous ordinance and the Borough Mayors task force amended habitat anadramous task force ordinance KPB 2013-18. It is expected to be a packed house, and I hope it is? As this is one of the single biggest issues the Kenai Peninsula Borough has untaken since its establishment nearly 50 years ago. “ZONING” without enforcement or the authority or budget to enforce in the name of fish, wildlife and waterfowl. As an advocate of habitat and conservation since the 1990’s and one who has invested sweat, blood, personal funds in to restoring anadramous habitat beginning when most could not spell anadramous I take great offence when people tell me I don’t understand. KPB 2011-12 and KPB 2013-18 are no more than an over reach of government on private property rights. When promoting stewardship and providing worthy property tax incentives could do the same thing with less government, less public funds and without the force of a badge and gun. Having felt the strong arm of Alaska’s government agencies like ADF&G so many years ago when starting a youth nonprofit organization sounded like a good idea as a means to promote stewardship and restore public anadramous habitat. I believe this is no more than tyranny as it will build more fear of government and less liberty of the people. With the Task Force recommended KPB 2013-18 published and then amended by the Mayor the task force showed its area of interest which included wildlife habitat and private property infringement rights, all it takes down the road is an amendment to this ordinance if passed and people could see migratory corridor restrictions and zoning through their back yards miles away from any anadramous stream.
