Tomorrow night at 8 PM! Cal State Fullertons Music Professor, Fureya Unal, takes to Meng Hall with the Divan Consort! Here is a blurb from Professor Unal and Divan Consorts program tomorrow evening!: Divan Consort is a Los Angeles based ensemble founded by the Turkish pianist Füreya Ünal. The ensemble is dedicated to performing music by composers from underdeveloped countries who have not had much, if any, exposure in Europe and the United States. In addition, the ensemble specializes in performing new music reflecting the highest artistic expression as well as the landmark compositions of the 20th century. As winners of the Beverly Hills Chamber Music Auditions, Divan Consort has been featured in such prestigious California music series as the Previews Concert Series, the Nixon Library, Live at the Lounge in Hermosa Beach, Concerts at Noon in Pasadena, and many more. Divan Consort has twice toured Europe. In the summer of 2010, they toured Portugal giving concerts at the 36th International Estoril Festival and throughout the Algarve region of the country. In the winter of 2010, Divan Consort again traveled to Europe for their second tour. They performed at festivals in Istanbul, Izmir, and Bursa, Turkey. In Istanbul, they were featured artists in the Istanbul 2010, Cultural Capital of Europe Festival. The ensemble’s debut CD includes premiere recordings of four diverse works by Uruguayan-born composer Miguel del Aguila, Turkish composer Özkan Manav and American composers William Kraft and Ken Walicki. The CD also includes the first recording of the revised version of Chen Yis Chinese Ancient Dances for clarinet and piano, and Aram Khachaturian’s well-known trio for clarinet, violin, and piano. The composers included on this CD are influenced by the music from their native lands, something very evident in their music. The musicians of Divan Consort, all of whom come from a variety of backgrounds and regions of the world, reflect this diversity. Divan Consort also regularly commissions and premiers works written specifically for them. Divan Consort is committed to enhancing diversity in music. They have based their careers on the belief that music and culture are primary dynamics in conveying peace and understanding to the world. Through music, they wish to bring tolerance, acceptance, appreciation, and thoughtfulness to their audiences. Divan Consort likes to perform themed concerts. The concert on the 12th is our Valentines Day theme concert. Program includes a dance from Turkey, Love Songs for a Mediterranean God by our composer in residence Ken Walicki. The text for these songs is taken from the writings of three Catholic saints: Catherine of Sienna, John of the Cross and Teresa dAvila. All three wrote poetry describing their relationships with God in highly charged sensual terms. Other pieces on the program are Seduccion by Miguel del Aguila, (This is a piece we have recorded on our debut CD which will be released on Albany Records very soon) Howard Hansons Serenade that he wrote to his wife as their wedding gift, Piazzollas Grand Tango, and Poulencs Romanza from his clarinet sonata. Tickets are still available!
