Tomorrows concert is a critics pick in The Wall Street - TopicsExpress

Tomorrows concert is a critics pick in The Wall Street Journal: The French composer Olivier Messiaen wrote his Quartet for the End of Time for the peculiar combination of clarinet, violin, cello and piano: the instruments played by fellow inmates at the prisoner of war camp where he was held in Germany. Thanks partially to the help of a sympathetic German guard who provided materials and a barrack in which to work, Messiaen wrote the quartet during his imprisonment and played the 1941 premiere at the camp to an audience of guards and prisoners. In addition to the quartet, this concert includes works by Einojuhani Rautavaara, Jörg Widmann, Pierre Jalbert and Elliott Carter. Tickets still available: ow.ly/vEtwd
