Tomorrows concert is a critics pick in The Wall Street Journal: The French composer Olivier Messiaen wrote his Quartet for the End of Time for the peculiar combination of clarinet, violin, cello and piano: the instruments played by fellow inmates at the prisoner of war camp where he was held in Germany. Thanks partially to the help of a sympathetic German guard who provided materials and a barrack in which to work, Messiaen wrote the quartet during his imprisonment and played the 1941 premiere at the camp to an audience of guards and prisoners.
