Tonight France is silent. Too many images run in peoples heads. Too many emotions are in everyones heart. 12 people were killed by Muslim terrorists in the middle of Paris and in the middle of the day. The street where the killing took place is a long boulevard that I know very well. My sister and I used to walk along it entirely to go to Bnei Akiva every shabbat. In my mind, it is the symbol of getting closer to the end of our lengthy road. It is difficult for me to imagine it stained by blood. Today, many people from abroad asked me if my dad was ok. My dad, Michel Gurfinkiel is a French journalist. He has never been afraid to say what he thinks on TV, on the radio or in the papers. His views are often unconventional. And he is quite brave in his opinions. In the France that I grew up in, no one is afraid to say what they think. The liberty of speech and the liberty of press are freedoms that we, French people, cherish very much. Tonight Im silent because something has been broken. Because Im not sure Ill be able to say that Im not afraid somebody with different opinions might want to hurt people I love. Because Im not sure I understand how people can nowadays kill in France for different ideas. Tonight we are silent.
