Tonight I got a glimpse into Rileys future as a speaker and advocate for T1D and the service dogs that help keep T1 Diabetics healthy...even save their lives. Riley and I were asked to come to Cal Baptist University and speak to an early childhood class that focuses on special needs students. The professor was referred to us by a friend that follows us on Facebook. We explained Rileys disease and why we chose to get Apollo. The triumphs and challenges of having a service dog at school and what a typical day with Apollo looks like. For those of you who know me personally, you will be surprised to hear that Riley did most of the talking. He absolutely blew me away by how articulate he was and how he handled the questions that were asked by the students. When asked how he views Apollo, Rileys response brought me to tears Hes my best friend...he accepts me for who I am...knows me...sees my needs...lets me cry with him...and doesnt judge me. (I wasnt the only one with wet eyes.) Apollo was on point as well...alerted to a high of 168 and then re-alerted a half hour later because his blood sugar was on the rise (Im sure it was due to being nervous to speak). They laughed as Apollo fully enjoyed his reward and ooooed and aaahhhed as Apollo wrapped himself around Rileys legs and laid his head on his feet. Tonight was one of those Ill never forget this kind of nights. So proud of both my boys and that we can spread awareness.
