Tonight I had really great, nuanced conversation about Teach For - TopicsExpress

Tonight I had really great, nuanced conversation about Teach For America with fellow alumni in a space that was organized by the organization. It was great because we were open and honest with our thoughts on TFA...both where its been and where its headed. No, were not all on the charter train. No, we dont all hate unions. Many of us are super concerned with how fast TFA is growing and many of us have mixed feelings about the 2 year commitment and what that means for communities already experiencing so much transition. All the alumni I know hate that TFA is used as a resume builder and want the organization to get better at weeding those folks out of the selection process. I stay involved with TFA because I will be eternally grateful for my experience in the Rio Grande Valley. I also feel free to check TFA at any time (and I do) when I think theyre doing something wrong, but Ive also seen the organization actually listen to critiques when non-profit world tends to put up blinders. Its not a perfect organization, but it is wonderful to see progress and meet alumni who are changing the lives of children and youth in the classroom or via other venues like policy, medicine, advocacy and more.
