Tonight, in the House of Commons, we will be voting on motion to provide support to, and defend the rights and dignity of those Canadians affected by the drug Thalidomide. It was an honour for me to speak in favour of this motion, here is my speech in the House: https://youtube/watch?v=AFW-QLFDUFQ In 1961, the Government of Canada approved the sale of Thalidomide on the mistaken belief that it was a safe drug to treat nausea for pregnant women. The drug had tragic consequences for many children and families. The Government of Canada has never apologized for the devastation it caused and only provided an inadequate one-time payment to survivors, many years ago. Victims of thalidomide have waited years to get the support they deserve – and tonight it appears as if that will finally happen. Thank you to my colleague Official Opposition Health Critic Libby Davies for introducing this important motion.
