Tonights Movie: BEETLEJUICE (1988). With all the talk of Michael Keaton in BIRDMAN, I decided to look back at one of his star-making roles. This film is just a guilty-pleasure. The narratives a bit of a mess, and suffers from Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis being such bland lead characters. They really have zero characterization aside from the fact they happen to be dead. Its Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder who are the real heart and soul of the film, but both are relegated to supporting roles. I never realized that Jim Carrey in THE MASK was basically just imitating Keaton in this film. Based on what Ive read, the original BEETLEJUICE script would have made a better movie, but Burton tinkered with it too much and realized what a find he had with Keaton and refocused the story a bit. The visuals are INCREDIBLE! Every set designer out there should be required to watch this film! And I love the Will Vinton-style claymation. This is easily one of the best live-action/animation hybrid films ever made. Hmm, I really want to listen to some Harry Belafonte now!
