Tonights The Greatest Bands That Never Were celebrates the 127th - TopicsExpress

Tonights The Greatest Bands That Never Were celebrates the 127th (or 126th, depending on your source) birthday of Huddie William Ledbetter, better known as Lead Belly. Born in Louisiana, Lead Belly was inclined to fight for keeps, serving a prison sentence for killing a relative over a woman, but granted clemency for writing a song to the governor. After being discovered by father and son promoters, Lomax & Lomax, he was convicted of attempted murder, but again his musical prowess was parlayed to grant him a reprieve. He was a multi-instrumentalist, who played over a dozen instruments from accordion to flute. But he is best known for his 12 string Stella guitar. One of the greatest song writers of the era, and a strong influence on Rock Music, he was a first ballot entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. Many songs he either wrote or traditional songs he arranged and recorded have entered the lexicon of rock music. Here, from 1940 on WNYC radio, with Woody Guthrie. youtu.be/HNj1WLpWDa8
