Too sharpe? Ok - I will bite, in order to propose an alternative view, but with the release of Arris 65mm and corresponding increase of resolution it has been suggested it will lead to more information than the viewers can cope with or be simply too sharpe. Whilst this may well be true at the point of acquisition. For example live 4k feed piped directly to broadcast 4k monitor etc. I have however never seen a image that is too sharp (Im am excluding Hobbit and 48fps from this discussion for all sorts of reasons) at the point of distribution. Ever. I watch 4k at home - mostly upscaled, and feel it is more cinema like, and not less. By way of illustration I know alot of you have mac retina displays - not 4k but closer than HD. Follow the link to the 4K house of cards trailer, select resolution of 4k (cog icon, bottom right) and frame rate of .25 - unless your bandwidth is good. youtu.be/gBabKoHSErI Are these images worse than the 2k alternate? - not in my mind. Having a system that allows the DOP to see every single flaw in the image on set is not cringe worthy but infact a very useful tool for key decision makers - this is the reverse of the film process where you had to go to dailies to see what you got. Potentially you could have more info on set than they do in post (post working in full res raw 4k some way from being common). I have never seen a true 4K DCP at Imax (anyone else?) but the up scaled 4k release of Bond, was never in danger of being too sharp, I actually liked the way this looked - more please. Best guess is that we are still 5 to 10 years from the common denominator viewer from seeing a single frame that is too sharp - even if the footage was shot with an 8k uncompressed camera and the best optics. For the real test look at the stills boys, it been a while since I have picked up a copy of French Vogue - but is the resolution too high? Do the models look rubbish? Ok this is not apples for apples I know. I have never seen any delivery footage that has too much resolution, I am not sure that it is possible to make a single frame too good - can anyone direct me to some examples?
