Top Five: Bizarre football injuries 5. Santiago Canizares Canizares suffered the heartbreaking injury when he accidentally smashed an aftershave bottle on his foot at Spains training camp ahead of the 2002 World Cup finals. A shard of glass got wedged in his right foot and the La Roja stopper had to undergo surgery to repair the wound, leaving Spain without an experienced player just weeks before their trip to South Korea and Japan. The Valencia stopper was Spains number one leading up to the tournament in Asia, but was forced out of the 23-man squad altogether and replaced by late call-up Pedro Contreras. 4. Darren Barnard The Welsh international took a tumble in his kitchen after failing to spot the canines mess, forcing him out for the majority of the campaign during his time at Barnsley. Barnard recovered to represent his country 24 times in a career which featured spells at Grimsby Town and Aldershot Town. 3. Darius Vassell Vassell used a drill to pop a blood blister under his toenail, a decision which caused an infection that led to half of the nail being removed. The England striker missed Villas Premier League clash with Blackburn Rovers with the blood infection in his big toe, with then Villa boss Graham Taylor sheepishly forced to concede that Vassell doesnt look after his feet properly. 2. Paulo Diogo Diogo was lauding his part in a late strike for Swiss side Servette in a 4-1 win over Schaffhausen, but his attempt to celebrate with home fans ended in sheer agony. The unlucky Diogo caught his wedding ring on a metal fence surrounding the stand, jumping back down to ground after sharing a moment with the fans without part of his finger. A newly-married Diogo paid a heavy price for the nuptials and despite stewards finding the missing limb an operation to reattach the tip of his finger was unsuccessful. The gruesome accident also failed to draw any sympathy from the referee, who booked Diogo for excessive celebrations while stewards scrambled to get the finger off the metal fence. 1. Kevin Kyle Kyle tried to feed eight-month old Max and had a jug of hot water ready to warm up his babys milk, but it was downhill from there for the ex-Scotland international. Young Max slipped and knocked the jug into his fathers lap, leaving Kyle with severely burnt testicles and a damaged inner thigh. Kyle was kept in hospital overnight for observation and missed Sunderlands 2-2 draw with Everton as a result, before sheepishly returning to training the following week.
