Top Ten Reasons for a Science Lab: 1. Questions pertaining to the use and conservation of our natural resources will be handed to our children to answer as they graduate high school. It is never too soon to get children excited about exploring these topics. 2. Research shows Science is best explored ,and better understood, when it is made real to children. A student is more likely to remember the physical properties of a mineral when they are able to hold various samples in their hand and see the differences, or understand the relationship between force and motion when they are able to build a pulley system. 3. Many Science investigations require the manipulation of liquids, recording changes that occur over time (days or weeks), building animal habitats, and closely observing samples of soil and rock. This is very difficult to do in a regular classroom where often materials can not be left out undisturbed. 4. A lab will offer every student equal access & space to use equipment needed to build a strong base of Science knowledge. 5. A lab would offer a space for students to build animal habitats, make samples of fossils, look at slides through microscopes, or conduct experiments using the properties of force and motion. Activities that many children do not get the opportunity to do home, and are logistically difficult to do in a small classroom. 6. A lab would be a visual reminder that DES is committed to Science education and values it in our educational program 7. A lab would be a visual reminder to our students to consider a career in Science when they grow up 8. A lab would be a great space for an on-campus field trip where an uncluttered space is needed for materials to be spread out 9. A lab would allow students to work with the often messy materials of Science education - soils, water, small animals (earthworms, and other critters) 10. A Science Lab would allow teachers a central space to store all their materials so grade levels could share resources. Eliminates overspending when multiple classes can share equipment. Help us make the DES science lab a reality!
