Topic for discussion: Technology creates more problems than it fixes. Ive always been a techie. Loved the idea of space travel, flying cars, teleportation, etc. But as I get older, I see that the more we progress, the more problems we create. Identity theft. 30 years ago, it was basically unheard of. Now, because we are all connected online, its commonplace. I get telemarketing calls, email and text messaging, stuff we didnt have to deal with 30 years ago. There was once a time you were able to fix your own car. Now, unless you have all sorts of diagnostic tools, you cant. In fact, most technology these days is not repairable, and its cheaper to throw out and buy another, than fix. As kids, we used to spend the entire day playing outside. Kids today play more on their computers and iPads than they do outside. The technology is enticing kids and theyre not getting enough exercise. We love our gadgets, our electric cars, our mobile devices, but the demands for energy are going to be the basis for the next world war. Why did we go into Iraq? Why are we still in the Middle East? Because those that control the energy will control the future. The US uses more energy than any other country. Wait until China and India catch up. The need for energy will be the catalyst for the next war. And its all because of technology. I read a CNET article today about solar panels that can be used as the surface for roadways. Initial costs are much higher than using asphalt or concrete, but because they generate electricity, they are supposed to have an ROI in less than 20 years. The numbers they quoted are based on many assumptions, but even if they were correct, do we really want to cover all roads with solar panels? What kind of planet are we creating? We worry about our carbon footprint, but then consider covering the surface of all roads with solar devices? I like technology like most people and I have to admit some things are better. But, just because we can do some things, doesnt mean we should.
