Torah portion Eikev "For Hashem your Lord is bringing you unto a good land, a land of brooks of water, of springs and depths that come forth from valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley and vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and [date] honey." Chazal tell us that initially all trees bore fruit and so shall it be in the days of Moshiach. A tree which does not bear fruit is a symptom of an imperfect World since the role of the tree is to bear fruit. "Man is a tree of the field" (Deuteronomy 20:19), and bearing fruit is the highest achievement of a tree. After all, there are seven species that represent the pinnacle of human and botanical fruit. These are the seven kinds of fruit and grain which the Torah tells us represent the fertility of the Holy Land: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. Shabbat Shalom
