Totaling it Up!! James writes, "My brethren, Count it all joy when you fall into various trials,"(James 1:2-3). The word "count" means to deem as, to reckon as. We get the English word, hegemony from this word, which Webster says, to have authority over. In other words, if you do not have a "sense of authority" over the trials (i.e. how you view them), you will not be able to consider your trials as "JOY." Notice also that he says "all joy!" Not just in them, but for them. The solution to all this is in the next verse, "Knowing this. . ." What do you need to know? That there is a purpose for trials, "it worketh patience." If you do not know this then, you will not be able to consider it all joy. I do not know what kind of trials your facing right now, but James gives us hope and confidence that everything the believer faces has a purpose. That our trials are not useless events. At times, hard to face and endure for sure, but never useless. Just saying!!!!
