Totally Locally Lymington were at the Summer Spectacular at Woodside Park on Sunday and had a great time raising awareness with the local community. The campaign, which began in Lymington at the start of the year has seen Lymington join 28 other towns across the UK in encouraging the local population to shop on their doorstep rather than go to the larger surrounding cities. There was a fundraising raffle whereby local stores all donated items and we engaged the public by getting feedback on what they felt about Lymington. We had some really interesting comments and ideas ranging from more flowers and bunting in the High Street to improvements in the appearance and produce availability of the market. There was also a consensus that better parking and more incentives to park at cheaper rates during the weekdays would also encourage people to come into the town. Better signage around the town was also an issue that the public commented on throughout the day. Anne Warren and Helen Parkinson (pictured) helped out with the festivities, which included a catch a duck game for the kids and also an opportunity to throw wet sponges at their parents – although we at TLL were mainly the target for this particular activity. Mayor Anna Rostand and Hampshire County Councillor Jacqui England also attended to give their encouragement. It’s great to see so many stores working together to help heighten the profile of the town and there’s a real camaraderie within the group. The important point about the campaign is that Totally Locally celebrates what’s on your doorstep. We plan to continue talking to the public and working together on all kinds of initiatives in the future. It was a great day all round with wonderful classic cars and a dog show as well as stalls and a boot sale. Filmed in 1945, the classic movie Brief Encounter stars Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. It’s a fitting last film to view using this genre of projection as part of the movie was shot at Brockenhurst Station. There’s a very special show on the last night with wine and food being served and everyone will be able to take away some souvenir 35mm film reel. Go and check out one of the greatest films of all time. This years theme was entertainment and there were a variety of floats reflecting this, with Elvis Presley among others, in evidence during the procession. There were marching bands, including the pipes and drums. There was also a Jazz band outside this years Sponsors, The Six Bells, in St Thomas Street. Organised by the Lions clubs of Lymington, there was also an open topped bus and the Mayor of Lymington, Anna Rostand and Jacqui England, Hampshire County Councillor, were seen waving to those below. The children made a great effort with dazzling costumes and the Carnival Queen was looking very glamorous as she waved to the crowds. All in all some great fun and we look forward to next year. Leave a comment FRENCH MARKET, VIVE LA HIGH STREET! French market The French Market came to town on Sunday June 16th and as you’ll see from the picture was a great success! Attendance was high throughout the day with all sorts of local produce from across the channel, including tasty Raspberry Jam Crepes, warm French sticks and of course a wide selection of cheeses from some of the most famous regions of the country. It was great to hear so many trying out their French linguistic skills on the stall-holders as well. Our wonderful stores were open too as the weather just about held off from the rains that were promised. This event will grow in the future but it was lovely to see the wide variety of offerings on show.
