Totally agree. The difference lies with singing. We are all born with this vocal instrument and start using it immediately. But with practice comes brilliance. To gig from the bottom upwards not only gives a experience in front of audiences, but a truthful account of a working musician. Its not all glitz and fanfares, stylists. Its more than the performance - driving yourself to gig, setting gear up, being your own sound engineer. Its occasionally singing with a crappy pa, band members having a strop, venues that turn you away after hours of travel because theyve double booked, audiences that couldnt give a F**k whether you are there or not or have a massive punch up, drunk people spilling drink all over your electrical gear, people talking in your ear whilst singing a song because you have to announce there is a taxi waiting for someone. The bottom of the ladder list goes on but it does get better and there are some great gigs out there. For me its not the epic arena gigs, much smaller ones but hugely satisfying. AND in my opinion all singers of pop/rock/contemporary field should work with a band, not just backing track karaoke style singing. I sing solo to tracks a lot for a living, but there is nothing like singing with a band and thats how I started and continue to do alongside the solo work. Bands are pure energy, spontaneous and will increase your overall musicality and appreciation to all that gets put in the pot to make a song work. Its not all about the singer. X
