Totally awesome concert with the Menai Beidge Band at their 120 yr anniversary bash last night. Incredible music! Such talented people! Such a range of ages! From 8 yrs old to 60+. I went to listen to a brass band. I expected to hear trumpets and trombones and a good bit of first class oompah music. Boy was I in for a surprise!. I can truly say I was mesmerised for the entire evening. The total power cut did nothing to deter the players, if anything it inspired more genius. There were times I felt like their was an international orchestra on the stage. To the lay man like myself it was magical, I could have sat there all day and night listening to the fabulous music, watching the concentration on the musicians faces as well as their torch holders! The music was big and epic, the arrangements were from the international stage. This was the night that the modern mobile phone came into its own. In the darkness the stage took on a magical feeling with the phone lights randomly scattered about. The feast in the interval was superb, the whole evening a refreshing and skilfully organised, locally sourced success. My favourite bit was watching Susie and Iolo doing a coordinated dance up and down the back of the stage as Iolo played his xylophone and bits and pieces, his head would zip one way closely followed by, Susie and her torch, then back they went up the other way, two heads bobbing back and fore with perfect timing creating magical sounds. Susie told me after that one of the pieces of music, Iolo, as stand in for the bands regular percussionist, had never set eyes on before the night. It was perfection from start to end. A wonderful night laid on by a super talented bunch of local geniuses. We are so lucky to have them and their 120 year history. Do you fancy being part of this amazing team? Even in a small way? So many of the musicians have joined with no experience and become accomplished and in some cases, world class artists. The roll of honour was astounding. Our 2 boys have just started with the band and especially the 8 yr old was hugely inspired by the Trumpet Solo, Gwyn Owen. I came away hugely inspired in all ways myself. Santa had better bring me the CD!
