Tower One of the virtues of compassion is the rescue and aid of the weak and oppressed. The Near East represents an important example of such a scenario. Everybody knows that the occupation and intervention by Western imperialist parties is characterized by exceeding military superiority. It is not even comparable to any historic confrontations. Even the Romans had a hard time establishing and maintaining superiority in that region. But then they did not have drones or highly sophisticated technology. On a technological level warfare was always near parity, relatively speaking. It was horses against horses or men, swords against swords, spears, maces, arrows and combinations thereof. But laser guided missiles into the living rooms of camping guerrillas is another story. It is important to realize that sympathy for the conflict is facilitated by the religious traditions and institutions in the West. There is an example of imperialist aggression that did not prevail after public outcry - Vietnam. But Vietnam is in the diaspora and this means the Christian diaspora. The Holy Land is a different story. The historical fronts that formed in the Near East are significant. And how significant they are is a question that demands decision in the absence of which an ignorance remains. This is the ignorance that accompanies the widespread rhetoric of freedom of religion. This is comparable to free speech that some interpret to be a license for indecency or impoliteness. It is opportunism. Participation in the customs or rituals of religious communities actually means conspiracy. This becomes increasingly intolerable when it means an increase of atrocities in Near East conflicts. Surely this must burden any conscientious participant of community event. As long as the Soviet Union existed there was at least a general ideological rejection and condemnation of religious practice and this meant with regard to the Middle East conflict that one of the bullies was not involved. The end of the Soviet Union means another conspirator.
