Towson Cadets get their first experience flying! In the month of January there were six cadets that had their very first O-Flight. O-Flights are an essential retention attribute of the Civil Air Patrols Aerospace Education program. During the first flight cadets get hands on experiencing and performing several maneuvers. Cadet Roshane Mills had this to say: I was nervous about the turbulence and when Captain Kool asked me to take over flying. But that was the best part! It was a real fun experience. Maybe I will be a pilot one day. The cadets flew for about .8 of an hour each. Before flying though cadet experienced a thorough pre-flight examination of the airplane and its components. As seen here, Captain Kool instructs the cadets in how to check the fuel. The fuel must not have any debris or water. Cadet Mills holds up the cup to check the fuels contents. The airplane is a four passenger Cessna 172P. The flight took off from Martin State Airport to continue over Deleware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. ------------------------------------------------------- Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 61,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. Its unpaid professionals also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 26,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs. CAP received the World Peace Prize in 2011 and has been performing missions for America for 72 years. CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans.
