Trade Union influence on the Labour Party - that old chestnut - TopicsExpress

Trade Union influence on the Labour Party - that old chestnut again! Trade Union membership currently stands at about 26% of the UK workforce. It peaked in 1979 when about 13 million people were members; has declined ever since and is now about 8 million. The UK workforce is about 29.5 million people. The registered UK electorate is about 45 million people. So roughly speaking union members now represent about 1/6 of the electorate. Coincidently, the Labour Party secured about 8 million votes in the 2010 election. But no one is pretending that that 8 million is the same 8 million who still pay a union due. Just thinking out loud.
