Traders in Anantnag town suffer `1,000 cr losses due to floods Islamabad (Anantnag), Sep 27: The Traders Federation here today said the business community in Islamabad town has suffered an estimated Rs 1,000 crore loss due to floods. It said it was assessing the losses suffered by the traders in Bijbehara and other smaller towns in the district. Islamabad town was hit by massive floods causing colossal loss to business and residential properties. Lal Chowk, Khanabal, Naibasti, Lower KP Road, Janglat Mandi, Court Road, Dangerpora and Mattan Chowk, forming major business centers in the town, remained submerged for around a week causing major damage to shops, stocks, commercial establishments and major business houses. With district administration yet to carry the assessment of the commercial loss, the Traders Federation Anantnag (Islamabad) here carried out what it said a self-assessment report. Talking to Greater Kashmir, Secretary Traders Federation, Riyaz Ahmad Bhat said, “The Traders Federation Islamabad formed a disaster Management cell to assess the losses and the preliminary report has pegged the loss at Rs 1000 crore in town alone”. He said that assessment is on in Bijbehara and other smaller towns. “Only 30 per cent of the business outlets are insured while remaining retail outlets are uncovered,” said Bhat. He said the government should immediately assess the business losses and without any further delay start rehabilitation of the affected traders. The business community contributes Rs 4,000 crore to the government in taxes, so the government should not ignore it,” Bhat suggested. He said the business in Islamabad has suffered a severe blow due to floods. “The wholesale units, retailer merchants, showrooms, business houses and some major car showrooms were severely hit by the floods and the loss is huge,” he said. The traders said the flood crippled them economically. “Many of us have lost our source of income and the government’s apathy has added to our woes,” they said. In Bijbehara town the traders said the commercial loss is huge as some of the main markets including Saddar Bazar, Goriwan, Zirpora and National Highway market were all submerged.
