Train number 31/32, the Leo Tolstoy, which services the Moscow - Helsinki - Moscow route, features car transport carriages. These all-metal-construction carriages contain special equipment for carrying cars, as well as fire alarms and security systems. Each car can accommodate three or four passenger cars, depending on their dimensions. The conductors perform the loading and unloading, and create an inventory of the vehicles. They are present, together with the passengers, for customs control to help ensure safe transit. Moscow and St. Petersburg feature a free shuttle service from the place where vehicles are loaded and unloaded to and from the station.
