Transcript of Michael Steenbergen Campaign Speech, Texas Senate District 24 Dallas Texas Democratic Party Convention June 28, 2014 [applause and Steenbergen takes podium] My name is Michael Steenbergen from Burnet County. I’m proud to be running for State Democratic Executive Committee from SD 24. I’m going to have to start by saying our current Representative, Bill, is doing a great job but the heart of Democracy is a competitive election process so I have thrown my hat in the ring. I’ve got extensive business background from being General Manager of a twelve outlet corporation in San Antonio and Austin [applause]. I’ve got extensive IT background from being network administrator for, again, a two city corporation that was in [Nuevo Laredo] Mexico and San Antonio. I am bilingual and that is important in our district. We… we have to be able to communicate with all of our voters in the area and I’ve worked with voter outreach for Hispanics because of being bilingual. [uhm] My political act… activities essentially began in 2010. A friend of mine, Leslie Gower commandeered me to work with the Linda Chavez campaign. I currently build websites for the Cameron County Democratic Women, the Chairman’s wife, her group’s website and I still work with the Hidalgo County Democratic Women. I’ve got an extensive list of political activities on that board that I brought but I prepared a five minute speech and we only have two so … [laughter] I will ask ya’ll to glance at the board after this election. You’re going to find that it it has an unusual twist here in just a second. [uhm] I’m gonna say .. I want to quote from Jose Marti… “Yo soy un hombre sincero de donde crece la palma y antes que morirme quierro echar mis versos del alma.” I am an honest man from where the palm tree grows and before I die I want to cast these verses from my soul. I want to raise my voice for the Democratic Party. I’ve been doing it extensively throughout Texas [applause] but I’m going to endorse and I will be voting for Bill. In all [interrupted by thunderous applause and shouts, voice calls for standing ovation, as audience stands and shouts more applause continues, chair calls for order] Is it an appropriate time to entertain a motion for acclamation? I move that we accept him [Bill Rosenburg] by acclamation… [several audience members second the motion, more applause and shouts, chair calls out ‘all in favor say aye’, chorus of ayes and more applause and Linda Goldsbie, Chair, states ‘the motion passes’ calls for order amid more shouts of approval and applause, audience asks” how much did you pay him Bill and room erupts in laughter]. The End
