Transcript of message delivered in celebration of the day of seafarer I would like to start my message by thanking and congratulating first all my fellow seafarers/kabayan as how we informally call each other over VHF overseas, who are here together with us to celebrate and those who are onboard vessels across the world who truly prove our todays theme that Pinoy seafarers move the world. To atty. Gloria V. Banas OIC administrator and deputy administrator for operations who has steered the industry in this difficult times under the leadership of Sec. Jun Abaya and Dr. Mejia who has spear headed the growth and development to the maritime industry and for steering us thru the difficult times for us to become a more competitive and internationally compliant seafarers, Directors, officers and staff of Marina, Leaders of the Maritime and Education Sector, Heads of Manning agencies, Fellow Officers, Engineers, Fellow seafarers, Ladies and Gentlemen a pleasant good day. Every year more than 12 billion tones of goods are shipped by 1.5 million seafarers worldwide and 25% of them are Filipino until today the largest block of a single nationality to man the global shipping trade. with this figure we are considered as the unsung heroes of an unsung industry, namely the shipping industry that carried the world trade in goods. I would like to quote the former Secretary-general of IMO when he said that (and I quote) The international community should pay tribute to the Filipino Seafarers and to the Philippines for their contributions to the shipping and international seaborne trade (unquote). Statistics and International leaders have and will always recognize the great contribution of the Filipino seafarers in the industry. But it is not all about numbers, it is all about the quality of labor and the dedication of the Filipino seafarers to their duties and responsibilities as officers and ratings manning their respective ships. Their loyalty to their principals by means of their commitment to ensure that cargoes are safely being delivered to the receivers. That operations are being conducted in a safe, efficient and effective manner given with all the surmountable task of business pressure, time constraint, workload and unfavorable weather condition. I cant offer no further commendation to my fellow seafarers more than the reward that they receive when we see our families back home. And as we celebrate this day to commemorate the glorious achievement and contribution of the Filipino seafarers to the global industry, I challenge once again my fellow seafarers to maintain the standards expected of us and to our leaders to continue in giving us support that we may dispose of our duties and responsibilities well in the global shipping trade.
