Traveling opens one up to so many new experiences. Thats true for me. While playing golf in Adelaide, Australia (we played there and in New Zealand once) I searched just off the first hole for my errant ball. In the process I found this clump of grey, red and black. I kicked it open. Its bat wings were about three feet long and its head grey and throat area red. The odor kept me from closer inspection. A couple holes later, two ladies asked if wed seen any flying foxes. I kidded with her a little and we continued on. As we started the back nine, I saw all these black pods hanging from large gum (eucalyptus) trees. Occasionally, the pod (wings) would open and the flying fox would move around on the branches. There were literally thousands of them along the adjoining canyon. Our Aussie friends didnt seem quite so pleased with them because of messes, diseases, etc. but they are protected and dont do well in extreme heat. Their summer had just ended and it was a hot one, leaving lots of dead bats strewn about the course. I couldnt help imagining a bunch of big-winged bats swooping around about sunset.
