Tremont Temple is right, the church is not the building. However - TopicsExpress

Tremont Temple is right, the church is not the building. However as the Black Church we nust share the responsibility for our historic institutions. Those downtown congregations Black and white were the cornerstone of the Black Community. The Black churches located in downtown Macon all share history and stories spanning Enslavement, Reconstruction, Segregation and the Civil Rights Movement, however, each one as a unique individual history. Tremont Baptist, if I remember correctly has the unique history of being organized by former First Colored Baptist Church members and benevolent First Baptist Chuch members after Emmancipation. These Freemen built a grand ediface to worship, educate and organize. The Tremont Church site Downtown has historic value to our Southern roots, African American heritage and the aesthetics of Downtown Macon. As a former church officer at Downtown Macon church I can empathize with Tremonts struggles with membership retention, urban development, building maintenance, finances and PARKING when they relocated....and in the new Bloomfield location we all understand the pressures of a mortgage commitment. However our history as African Americans in this little community we call Macon, Georgia is beyond a monetary value, I pray that with Historic Macons interest in the site with the support of Tremont Temple and the review of the Design Review Board - we can save part of the Macons story ---- one that I truly love!
